Completely and utterly hilarious, enjoyable, weird and demented, Kevin Smith's "Tusk" is unlike anything else you'll likely see.

I went into "Tusk" with some worry and reservation.

I consider myself a fairly big Kevin Smith fan. Particularly admiring his films "Chasing Amy", "Dogma" and "Red State." And I think the (fairly recent) "backlash" against Smith is unwarranted for the most part. His films have always been unique and had a flavor all their own. And the man himself has always been open, candid and participatory with his fanbase. (Heck, this film's production was decided by his Twitter followers.) I just don't see why, in the past year or so, an increasingly vocal portion of the internet has turned against him.

But I wasn't sure what to make of this new film. Knowing it was inspired by an episode of his podcast left me worried it would be one-note. Knowing it was his first real foray into the world of "body horror" (a sub-genre that is incredible when done well, but laughable when done poorly) left me worried it might not quite work. And knowing full-well of its ludicrous premise left me worried it would either be too restrained or go way too far. I was worried this might be the first Smith film that I just couldn't get behind or even like. (And yeah, I even kinda dug "Jersey Girl", albeit admitting it was flawed.)

But boy, was I wrong. While it's definitely far from perfect, and far from being his best work, "Tusk" represents a bizarre, hellish and hilarious thrill-ride that left me constantly gasping and laughing. It's a terrifying fun-house ride and a twisted clown show that should please Smith fans and horror/comedy audiences looking for their fix of "weird."

Justin Long stars as Wallace Bryton, an American pod-caster who savagely makes fun of people in popular viral videos with his co-host. (Haley Joel Osment) When his trip to Canada goes wrong, and he discovers the subject of an interview he had scheduled has passed away, he attempts to salvage the journey by finding someone new to talk to for the show. He stumbles upon an open letter from "Howard Howe" (Michael Parks), a reclusive old man seeking someone to share his lifetime's worth of stories with.

However, Wallace soon discovers Howe has an ulterior motive. Obsessed with a hatred of humanity and an idolization of a wild walrus he had "befriended" while at sea, Howe wishes to use surgical means to transform Wallace into the animal friend he had known years ago. As Howe slowly begins to alter Wallace's body into a grotesque new form (while mentally conditioning him to embrace his wild side), Wallace's girlfriend Ally (Genesis Rodriguez) begins a desperate struggle to find Wallace and save him from his demented captor.

The acting is excellent all around, but Parks steals the show. Howe is equally charming, amusing and perfectly over- the-top, while also still able to be threatening. As weird as it is to say, I could see Parks winning some major awards for the role. Long is fantastic as Wallace. Though undeniably unlikeable, you still feel for him, and get a sense that beneath his cruel exterior, there's a fragile soul. And his role as the "transforming" Wallace/Walrus is just a hoot to watch. Rodriguez and Osment ground the film perfectly, giving wonderful weight to their smaller roles.

The only actor I cannot really comment on is the well-known and even mythical guest-star who shall go unnamed, to save the surprise. But what I can say is that this guest-role will definitely leave audiences polarized, as it's VERY "out there." But I felt that, within the context of the film, it worked. The movie is quite zany on its own during the second half, and I think this character did a good job "ushering in" the audience to the film's true craziness when he showed up. And he supplied PLENTY of laughs.

Smith's work on the film is an undeniable sign of growth as a storyteller. His script is tight, concise and full of great moments of shock and hilarity. And I found this to be by far his most visually striking work. Smith often used to sort-of belittle his own skills as a director and visual storyteller. (In part because his first film films were basic and simple in their execution) But this film is slick, stylish and wickedly shot. His guidance of the camera and performances is expert, and the senses of dread and humor he builds are wonderful.

However, this is definitely a film of some flaws, which is where it loses some points. The film has some "fat" to be trimmed. (Or would that be "blubber" in this case?) A few sequences feel too drawn out, which creates a somewhat inconsistent pacing that makes it feel jarring at times. I also felt that the (rather radical) tonal shift that occurs midway through could give some viewers a sense of "stylistic whip-lash." And it could be argued that the movie is a bit clustered in it's final half-hour, attempting to juggled a variety of emotions including fear, dread, sorrow, bemusement and amusement. It's almost too hard to concentrate and be mindful of how the film makes you feel, which is a pretty big problem.

That being said, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't completely absorbed in the movie from start-to-finish. And I most certainly will admit that I completely and utterly enjoyed myself. (And was quite shocked by just how darkly hilarious the film was, even at its bleakest moments.) It's not a film for everyone. And I can understand the polarized reaction. But for me (as a Smith fan, a fan of horror, and a fan of "the weird" and "strange") this was definitely worth seeing. And I will be buying it the second it's out on Blu-Ray.

I give "Tusk" a pretty-good 7 out of 10. Not for everyone. But if you're even remotely curious, it's well worth giving a shot.

I Draculiked it

I thought it was pretty good. Films like Twilight pretty much destroyed my interest in vampires, but gradually my interest came back by watching films like Daybreakers and Underworld. And with this, we're back on track.

Casting: 8/10 At first, I thought Luke Evans wouldn't be too great as Dracula. And come to think of it, when he was talking to his men to encourage them, it almost felt like I was watching Bard the Bowsman talking to the residents of Lake-town. But once I got over that, I couldn't help but realize that he is a fantastic actor and that he certainly brought Vlad to life. The other actors are also well chosen, nothing out of the ordinary, but solid. Also fun to see Charles Dance in something else than Game of Thrones, although I must say I didn't recognize him at first (you'll see what I mean). Overall, casting is great.

Music: 9/10 The soundtrack was absolutely fantastic. I mean, what else would you expect if virtuoso Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Pacific Rim, Prison Break, Game of Thrones, Person of Interest and even video games like Medal of Honor: Warfighter and Shift 2: Unleashed) created it? He's the Iranian version of Hans Zimmer. It's worth watching the credits for solely the music. Speaking of credits, there's nothing after them. So unless you want to enjoy the music, like I did, there's no reason to stay.

Plot: 6/10 Although the premise was good, the plot in this film feels absolutely rushed. The fact that the film has around 85 minutes of playtime, without credits, doesn't really help either. Some lore and some history about the Turks and their feud with the Transsylvanians would have been nice. In the intro, you get a brief explanation but it felt really cheesy to me. If the movie would have been an hour longer, they could've certainly let the characters develop more, let the plot naturally unwrap without forcing it to unfold, have Vlad practice with his powers more (he seems to have mastered them only 5 minutes after gaining them) and so on. This was kind of a let-down. However, if you bear all this in mind, you might enjoy it more than I did. Don't expect too much of the plot.

Visuals: 10/10 Well, I can't really add much more to this other than that this film has absolutely amazing visuals. The more the movie progresses, the more you will notice this. Sometimes it does get a little "overvisualized", but that didn't really bother me. Especially not after having seen "The Desolation of Smaug".

Script: 7/10 The dialogues were rather, 'meh', if you catch my drift. Sometimes there's so much cheese involved that you think you're having a French dish with wine and bread. It's not bad, it's just.. very predictable and sometimes laughably funny. But it's never THAT sub- mediocre that you feel embarrassed for watching it. Let's just conclude that it could have been much better.

Overall, the music and the fast-paced, beautifully visualized action really make this movie worth the watch. Lower your expectations a tad and enjoy it for what it is. That's what COUNTs.

My first sort-of mistake was going to see Constantine at 11:30 A.M.; this would have been a much better experience in a nighttime atmosphere I feel. In fact, I'm thinking about going again this weekend at night.

That being said, I still enjoyed this movie immensely. For starters, I actually thought Keanu was quite good in the role, and it didn't take long to forget drawing comparisons to Neo. I haven't read the comics, but I thought Keanu did a great job with the role... I laughed and winced right along with him, not at him! All the supporting actors (yes, Shia LeBeouf included) were great, and my only issue is that they didn't get enough screen time to explore their characters further. Djimon Hounsou was especially cool as Papa Midnite... with a name like that, how can you not be?! Finally, Rachel Weisz deserves the "better than the movie" comments she's been getting in reviews. Yes, she is that good, and she's pretty foreign to genre work (but should definitely do more)! I can't believe I'd only seen her in About a Boy before this; her magnetism had almost got me to pick up Confidence and Runaway Jury at the video store (which I have not. Yet). For one, she does a damn good American accent - I had forgotten that she's British. I'm sure many other reviewers will put this in better words than me, but she really adds a whole new level to this movie. Her performance is easily the most daring and heartfelt of the bunch, and I'd even go as far to call it subtly exquisite... a phrase I don't hesitate to equate with the actress herself. If Rachel Weisz had not been a part of Constantine I wouldn't have liked it half as much as I did. Even if you're not a Keanu or genre fan, I'd still check this movie out if you (like yours truly ;) have a thing for gorgeous, talented under-the-radar actresses.

Onto special effects. Pretty darn impressive, if you ask me. NEXT! I'm definitely very tempted to check out the Hellblazer comics because I really love the mythology and style of the Constantine universe. I mean, Hell as a parallel dimension to our own world? How cool is that? Certainly less banal than most movie versions of Hell. The story is based around Catholicism, and it's just how I like my organized religion -- all twisted! All in all, Constantine was made up of a lot of things that I really love in my movies: detailed fantasy universe, fun characters, good effects and action, and of course, the vulnerable-but-butt kicking woman. Yay! The major problem with the film, I feel, was bringing all of its elements together. Throughout the film I kept thinking to myself what I would've done differently. There was so much crammed into it that every single character and plot point felt underused and ignored -- not one thing was explored deeply enough for my satisfaction. They should have chosen just a few elements of this complex universe and story arc for this movie and left the other stuff for subsequent Hellblazer flicks (which I hope there will be!).

So basically, the parts here are very interesting and cool and worth a look-see, but the whole just can't service all of them. Which is a damn shame. I left the theatre wanting MORE, wanting to know more about the characters and what living in their universe was like. MORE, darnit!! While Constantine is fun and nice in its own right, I would've really liked to see it expanded to its potential. Oh well! At least there's the fantastic Rachel Weisz, so I can't complain further ;) Last words: I want to see it again! Maybe not buy the DVD but definitely rent it. Oh, and those rumors about an extra (albeit short) scene after the credits are true, so STAY through them!

However, I would recommend that you not go into the movie expecting a Die Hard clone. Hostage sacrifices heavy action and humor for a darker, more character-driven tale, and it works. THIS is how a thriller should be! Things start off on an intense note as we see a grizzled-looking Bruce Willis attempting to negotiate with a psycho who has locked himself and his family in their house. He's got a gun, and he's clearly not right in the head. I will not reveal what happens, but flash forward a year later and having burnt himself out in the negotiation business, Willis is now a police chief in a smaller town. You think he'll be called on to use his negotiation skills again? If you say "no" then please let me slap you upon the cheek.

The thrills only intensify from there once the trailer park trio takes Kevin Pollack's family hostage. I really like the fact that we have two sets of bad guys here. There are the white collar criminals who remain faceless, yet ruthless in their desire to get what they want. Then there are the blue collar boys who make a stupid mistake and get in way over their heads.

I also appreciate the fact that the blue collar bad boys aren't one-dimensional. Jonathan Tucker plays the older brother (Dennis Kelly), and he does a great job of making his character somewhat sympathetic. He's a small-time wannabe tough guy who gets himself in a very bad situation that only escalates as the movie progresses. As the situation worsens, we see that Dennis regrets what he's done. He obviously wants to be anywhere else at the moment. He's scared, but he continues to try to talk tough. He's reaping the consequences of falling in with the likes of Mars.

Mars, portrayed by the show-stealing Ben Foster, is a long-haired, black clothes-wearing troublemaker. His back story is completely a mystery at the beginning, but we deliberately begin to see that he may not be quite as sympathetic as the others. Is he pure evil? Cold-blooded? Misunderstood? Regretful? Revealing anything would be a disservice to your viewing enjoyment, so I'm not saying anymore except that the character is very well-developed.

I know it's only March, but other than Million Dollar Baby, Hostage is the best movie I've seen this year. If you want a fun, suspenseful night at the movies then ignore the critics whining and moaning about clichés and improbabilities and go check out Hostage. I love the irony in the fact that half of the negative reviews on Rottentomatoes complain about the clichés in the movie. Wow, at least THAT complaint isn't cliché or anything. Try a little originality yourself.

Some of these critics like to go to Wal-Mart before a movie like this and purchase the biggest, most industrial strength Nitpicker they can find. You didn't know that was an actual tool? Oh yes. They're owned by every single uptight critic who white-knuckle clenches his Movie Snobbery PhD degree at all action and thriller movies. Don't listen to 'em. Hostage is a movie for movie fans, not movie elitists.

One good thing Steven Spielberg has done for 21th century movies is to show the importance of starting things off with a bang rather than a whimper, something he learned from the old grade B films of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. So when director John Singleton begins "Four Brothers" he doesn't dwell on background material about how mom came to be the shining star for her boys. Singleton goes right for the jugular by showing mom's demise--I say showing, the viewer doesn't actually see the killing in the beginning. Singleton builds up the relationship between mom and the brothers step by step, letting a Detroit policeman, Lt. Green (Terrence Howard), introduce the four brothers as they show up for the funeral and become reacquainted. Not to give away the story, one heavy leads to another until the whole city of Detroit becomes a personification of corruption and evil. I loved the Motown music played throughout the film which was very apropos for the setting.

Even though the acting was first-rate throughout, I especially liked the performances given by Josh Charles as Detective Fowler and by Garrett Hedlund as Jack Mercer. I know Josh Charles has appeared in movies I have seen but I don't remember his acting standing out as it does in this film. Also Chiwetel Ejiofor was just right as the slimy egomaniac Victor Sweet--and what a name for a character this egregious.

The action is first rate and there is plenty of it from start to finish. Hold on to your seats for the scary gun battle between mom's boys hold up in her old house and Sweet's hired thugs. You won't be able to get out of your seat during this shoot-out.

I highly recommend this movie for fans of the genre. Others should enjoy it too.
